Pumpkin Carving Fun

James was looking forward to carving a Jack 'O Lantern. He wanted a "Swiper" 0ne (a character from Dora the Explorer). He saw it on tv - unfortunately he has lazy parents.

Here he is waiting for Andy to open up the pumpkin.

Totally posed shot. He stuck his arm in, gagged, and declared it "Totally gross." So really, Andy carved a pumpkin.

James dictated where the eyes, nose, and teeth went. Then supervised the carving process.

And of course posed with the final result.

After potty training for about 300 years, James seems to have finally decided that it's better to go in the potty, rather than his pants. His parents are greatly relieved.

To celebrate, he got a Thomas the Train set. A BIG Thomas the Train set.

It seems to have come with about 10 miles of track. And a remote control. That makes noise. And has no volume control. Thanks Nana.

We had a fun holiday weekend at the cottage. And were lucky enough to get to spend time with Tom, Sara, Nathan and Ellie.

Starting the day with some cookies from Nana Garn.

The boys, and all the dogs, splashing in the water.

Stopping for a moment to get another cousin shot. Sporting (relatively) matching outfits.

Time for a bath to wash off the cookie crumbs, popsicle stick, and approximately 2 tons of dirt he accumulated on him during the day.

Butteflies are Blooming

We visited the Butterflies are Blooming exhibit at Frederik Meijer Gardens this past weekend.

Here's our little caterpillar (I love being able to talk him into silly stuff like this!)

James fascinated by something (I actually think it was a bird in the exhibit). He wasn't as excited about the butterflies as we thought he'd be. We narrowly avoided him stomping a butterfly to death in front of a group of kids. I think they would have thrown us out for that! He really is such a little boy sometimes - had to be restrained from carnage.

The Easter Bunny visited the Garn house today. And left about 2930482 lbs of candy. We think he's in cahoots with the Tooth Fairy!

Checking out some of the presents. Yes, you could actually see his face *if* he took his hat off. But he won't.

The sneaky bunny also left some eggs around the yard.

It's kind of amazing - he can't find his shoe if it's farther than 1 foot away from him, but he can find candy in a tree.

Running water in our house isn't unusual. James must wash his hands 6 or 7 times a day (he's kind of oddly fussy about it).

When he walked out of the bathroom one morning and said "I need a boat", I decided I should probably check on what he was actually doing in there!

He combed his hair.

And filled the sink to play with his Ernie, Elmo, and boat tub toys.

And pretty much managed to soak himself, the sink, and the floor during the process.

At least he had fun!

Pioneer Days 2009

James and his cousins, Joshua and Evan, had an up close and personal view while waiting for the parade to begin.

Turns out that James didn't think that was a real great idea once the parade began. Sitting farther back and in Papa's lap seemed like a much safer idea.

Joshua, being a year older, knew just EXACTLY what had to be done to score candy!

Did we mention that Joshua shared ALL the candy he scored?

Later, at Nana and Papa's house, there were more visits with family. Aunt Nicole even brought silly string to play with.

Yeah. The boys thought it was a great idea. Maybe not so much Uncle Buck. James mostly just carried his can around.

Finally, a stop to visit more family at Mehl Lake and then it was up to the Keweenaw!

We spent a fun afternoon watching the Cubs win - in only 13 innings! Turns out that was about 7 innings too long for a 2 year old boy :)

The view of Wrigley Field after we got out of the cab. James got his first cab ride - he was a little scared! It was one of the best cab rides we've had in Chicago, though.

We took advantage of the nice weather and the family zoo membership we got from Sara & Tom this morning.

We learned something: James loves to pretend to be a bear. But when he actually sees one, he totally freaks out.

My trip to the U.P.

I got to visit my grandpa and grandma in the U.P. again while my dad went snowmobiling with his friends. Each day started out with breakfast with the birdies... there were a lot of them and it was hard to eat breakfast when I wanted to keep looking out the window.

Then it was time to go outside. It was below zero the whole time so I had to dress warm and wasn't allowed to stay out as long as I wanted to. It made me pretty mad...

First I got a sled ride to warm up my grandpa...

Then Will and Bozzy and I had to help grandpa knock down those high snow banks. I think I was really a help to him...

The next day, a little girl came over to play with me. She was just my age and her name was Aria. Her grandma and grandpa are good friends of my grandma and grandpa. They even went to high school together!

Our grandpas showed us all the birds and the bunnies and the squirrels...

Then we played with my mom so she wouldn't feel left out...

We played in my toy tent. I never did get to play with all the toys in there. She just wanted to play with the stuffed animals and read books and I wanted to play with the trucks. I guess she just doesn't know what's really fun.

This is just a picture to show how a bear goes... he growls loud!

I had to check the temperature outside when it was time to go... I couldn't see through the frost on the glass, though. I was pretty cold.

I got my hat and boots on, though, grabbed the cooler, rounded up the dogs, and I was set to head home.

The handprints on the glass were all that was left... and the toys all over the house. That's so my grandma and grandpa don't miss me too much.

Another Milestone

Stitches! A little boy, an office chair and a computer desk = ER visit.

He's cut right through his lip and had to get three stitches to close the wound.

He had the trauma of being pinned down and stitched up and being in the ER for 2 1/2 hours. The first thing he does when he gets home?
Drags a kitchen chair over to the counter and climbs up it to get crackers.

We went to Chuck E. Cheese for the first time last weekend. It was mom's first time, too! I can understand why they serve beer at that place!

James wasn't sure about the place at first, but by the end of our visit, he was running around like a sugar crazed maniac.

He's not too sure about the whole "ride" thing.
